Find out about rubbish collection services in Nelson. Rubbish collection is operated on a 'user pays' system provided by commercial operators. Two companies offer a rubbish bag collection service; both are user-pays systems. Please contact them directly for all information, including collection days. Bags from Nelmac are available for purchase from the Council office in Trafalgar Street or you can contact both companies directly for details on where else bags can be purchased.

The purpose of the Stage 3 report is to evaluate the four best arterial route options against various criteria and modelling scenarios and present this data to the public. Below is a summary of some of the assessment outcomes for each of the options. All costs are estimates. Please note that letters assigned to the options refer to the original long list in the Stage 2 report, which is why they appear out of order.

This option proposes to install part time initially peak-hour clearways on Rocks Road and Waimea Road. Outside the clearway periods the lanes would be available for parking. This option also includes provision for a 4m wide shared path along the waterfront.

Note; severance is defined as the road causing a disconnection of the community from local services. Increased severance, reduction of on-road parking at peaks, more difficult access to properties on Rocks Road and local businesses, opportunity to improve access from side streets and properties, improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

Increased severance and reduced safety for pedestrians, increased delay at intersections for motorists, reduced on-road parking at peaks, increased roadside parking in off-peaks, improved access from side streets and roadside properties if more traffic lights installed. Increase in property values — currently suppressed by threat of Southern Arterial, and less community stress with decision made.

Human exposure level Moderate -Although this option produces higher road associated PM10 contributions than the other options the existing background contributions are low to moderate and the dispersion characteristics good. They wish to provide a cultural impact assessment on the recommendation after Stage 4 Report is publicly released. It is a lower standard that the Southern Link in that it provides one lane in each direction with relatively narrow shoulders and at-grade rather than grade separated intersections.

Reduces traffic volumes on existing arterial routes. Significant improvements in both the AM and PM peaks on the existing arterial routes as traffic spread over three corridors. Potential future opportunity to enhance cultural, social and recreational attributes of waterfront, and small reduction in traffic on SH6 but could increase speeds. This option involves constructing a new seawall to the northwest of the existing frontage on Rocks Road and providing a dual carriageway with cycle lanes on both sides of the road.

Major property impacts with upwards of 80 properties likely affected and a large number of buildings demolished.

Negligible change in traffic volumes. Additional traffic signalised intersections may introduce delay for traffic on arterial route. No capacity issues on the SH but little improvement on Waimea Rd corridor compared to the base as modelling shows vehicles not attracted from this route.

Human exposure level Moderate. Modelling of the four laning options indicates lower road associated PM10 contributions than the other options, with this route having low to moderate existing background contributions and good dispersion characteristics. Major property impacts with upwards of properties likely affected and a large number of buildings demolished. Does not provide large alterations in traffic volumes.

Some transfer of trips in peak hour and peak direction onto widened corridor. Few locations with capacity constraints but no significant improvements in terms of travel times as there is a greater number of intersections. Possible reduction in traffic on SH6, potential future opportunity to enhance cultural, social and recreational attributes of waterfront. Loss of residential amenity for remaining homes, road closer to schools and Nelson College; removal of vegetative buffer, swimming pool and playing courts at Nelson Girls College, property purchase — homes, commercial and retail premises, community services and facilities, loss of small retail outlets, and faster traffic speeds could increase severance.

Modelling of the four laning options indicates lower road associated PM10 contributions than the other options, with this route having moderate existing background contributions and moderate dispersion characteristics.
